ICON Schedule
This afternoon I’m flying down to Iowa to be Toastmaster at ICON 38. Which means I get to introduce and interview and generally hang out with their long list of guests of honor:
- Hugo and Nebula winning author Nancy Kress
- Hugo and World Fantasy Award winning editor Ellen Datlow
- Writer Jack Skillingstead
- Artist, Author and founder of ICON Joe Haldeman
- Editor and Mommy of ICON Gay Haldeman
- Author, Nebula and Hugo nominee and Co-Founder of ICON Gregory Frost
- Fan Guest of Honor Steven Keith Tait
Any suggestions for questions I should ask, or particularly juicy stories I should share during opening ceremonies? 🙂

I’m bummed I won’t make the benefactor brunch this year. It was a lot of fun chatting last year. But, the writing group thing takes priority… still.

Enjoyed seeing you and hearing to you listen to your story at Windycon last weekend!

Nuts. I meant “hearing to you READ your story”

I heard from my spousal unit that she had a ball chatting with you at the brunch. Thank you.

I’m glad! 🙂
How was the writing group?

A lot of fun and educational.
I like (hopefully) helping others improve their writing and getting to see different styles of writing, genres, and topics. I also like what Mickey brings to the table and her observations. Even if she points out I still have a problem with sequencing in both novels she’s seen now.
Unfortunately, because more than one of us liked to talk (*cough*), we went over the time limit (4 hours) and I had to pretty much walk out of the critique of my own piece because I had parental obligations. So, I got all the negative comments but missed all the positive ones (assuming there were some).

D’oh! That’s frustrating. Any chance of following up with Mickey to see if you can get some balance?
A group here in Michigan gives each person a set time, and if you go over you have to contribute $ to the group’s snack fund.

I should consider mentioning that with our group. We have three submissions every week and only 2.5 hours to do it. 🙂
She gave me all her notes on my piece. I just don’t get the insight that comes from her speaking or any expansion on details. I also didn’t get a good read on her opinions of me leaving (I really didn’t want to), so I’m hesitant to ask for more than I deserve, if that makes sense. Plus, she was a bit… cold when I saw her later.
I’m hoping that once I go through the notes (and imagine her speaking), I’ll get most of the important points. The ones I miss will either show up with another reader or I’ll just keep missing. Not much else I think I can do other than to keep writing, have fun, and never give up trying to improve.
… and maybe actually finish something.
