Book Giveaway: Goblins or Libriomancer
About two weeks ago, I received my author copies of the Science Fiction Book Club editions of Libriomancer and The Legend of Jig Dragonslayer.
This makes me happy for lots of reasons. Many of the books on my shelves came from the SFBC, back when I was younger and there was no way I could afford full-priced hardcovers. And then I found the SFBC. Five free books at sign-up? Reduced-price omnibus editions? Sweet! This is how I first discovered authors like Robert Asprin, Fred Saberhagan, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula LeGuin, even Asimov and his Foundation Trilogy.
So I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate this milestone, my first books to make it into the club, with a giveaway. And since the stress-o-meter has been running rather high lately, I’m gonna go with something happy and hopefully simple for this one.
All you have to do is leave a comment and tell me about one of the best things that happened to you in 2012.
I’ll pick one commenter at random next week and send them an autographed copy of the SFBC edition of either Libriomancer or The Legend of Jig Dragonslayer. Their choice.
This isn’t a U.S.-only contest, so anyone can enter.

My husband got a promotion that let me stop worrying so much about the getting-a-job-the-moment-the-kids-are-in-school thing. Now I feel like I have enough time to look for a job I’ll love rather than just one to keep ahead of the last few emergencies.

Early last year, I took a risk, spent a load of money and went off for a holiday in Toronto. It was the first time I’d been on holiday in about twelve years, my first time on holiday without my parents, and my first time crossing the Atlantic. I did some sightseeing. I went to Niagara Falls. I met some friends I’d only known online for the first time. It’s easily one of the best things I’ve done, not just in 2012, and it’s already prompted me to start venturing out more since – in August I spent a weekend in Krakow. Between that, and buying my first home, 2012 has been a good year. 🙂

The best thing that happened to me in 2012 was bittersweet. My 87-year old mom broke her upper arm after Hurricane Sandy so we brought her (and her 4 dogs!) here to live with us for 2 months. Because of that we were able to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas together which we haven’t done for years due to distance and schedules. It was wonderful (and stressful). She’s now back home doing much better and our lives are a lot quieter!

The best thing that happened came from the worst thing. My stupid, stupid, stupid indoor kitty with health problems got out and was missing for a week. But he found his way back home so I could go off to Worldcon and be super-extra-happy there. Maybe Worldcon was the best all-good thing.

In 1982, when I was 5th grade, I fell in love with the book “The Call of the Wild.” Ever since then, I’ve wanted a Saint Bernard. (yeah, I know… Buck wasn’t a full blood Saint, but I always considered him one.) Last March, I finally realized I was in the perfect place both financially and space wise to get one. I picked up my new best friend the first of June.

Life is like a rollercoaster.
Some of my highs in 2012 included launching my website on 29 April 2012, transferring my focus from an ‘old school’ style fanzine to the website, continuing to build publishing industry networks, review genre and interview Australian and international authors and genre personalities, which was all part of what led to the best news of all…
I applied to RMIT for an associate degree in Professional Writing and Editing. The interview began with the guy basically giving me a verbal pat on the head, effectively telling me I wasn’t going to get in – it was waaaay to competitive – but I should be really proud of myself for getting to the interview stage for such a competitive course.
At the end of the interview both interviewers told me I did REALLY WELL in the interview (a total of THREE TIMES), then the guy shook my hand and said, ‘I’LL SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.’
That afternoon I attended a book launch for Isobelle Carmody. Afterwards I was talking to Erica, an editor at a particular publishing house. I described my interview. She assured me that this particular course is highly respected in the industry and lots of people in the industry (authors and editors etc) have started here. She gave me her card and told me, ‘When you’re looking for a job, CALL ME.’
In December I received a letter from RMIT telling me they wanted to make me an offer (for a place in the course).
Not bad for a person who lost her job 7 years ago due to disability discrimination and has only had 10 days’ paid work in 7 years.

The best thing that happened in 2012 was… nothing. I tend to have freakishly bad luck, but finally had a lovely year free of the typical car accidents, illness, family deaths, pet deaths, injuries, and epically bad vacations. It was wonderful. I’m buying lottery tickets this year; maybe the luck will continue.

One of the best things from my 2012: the four of us (me, my husband, and our two young kids) traveled to L.A. for a wedding. I was sure the boys would have a rough time on the flight and be hugely cranky by the time we finally got to bed that first night, but they did awesome that night and on the 6 hour flight home! We got to spend time with my husband’s family and see Space Shuttle Endeavor in her new home. Also, my husband got me Libriomancer for Christmas and I got to be a bum and read the whole thing in like 2 days 🙂

The best thing to happen to me in 2012? Giving birth to my son!
The doctors had all told me I couldn’t get pregnant. After 4 years of trying everything we could think of I was inclined to agree. We gave up. My husband went back to school and we used the “baby fund” to pay for it. We stopped trying.
Of course, that’s when I got pregnant.
My obgyn was convinced I couldn’t have a healthy baby. I got a new obgyn. The tests came out great, but because I’m overweight and had fertility issues the doctors were hesitant to give me any encouragement. So I took all the extra tests they insisted on. Every time my baby registered as healthy and developing well.
They thought since I was overweight he would be a huge baby. He was big alright…he was LONG! His weight was perfectly normal at 8lbs 2oz, but he was 20 1/2 inches long! He’s still tall for his age group.
My son is now seven months old, already standing and trying to walk around while holding things for support, and a very healthy and active child. It may take me until he’s in college to pay off all of the extra medical bills, but he’s worth every penny.

I survived a heart attack. Or rather, three of them. And my best friend was responsible.
Last winter, I had intense pain through my shoulders. It did hurt bad enough that I did make a late-night call to said friend. But he and his wife were out and eventually the pain subsided. I let things pass. Actually didn’t comment on it to anybody.
Five months later, the same situation ocurred. My friend was at a client’s office, while I was aiding in the work, remotely from at home. I suffered the same symptoms. I pish-poshed it as old man’s aches and pains. My friend wanted me to go to Emergency right then and there. I demurred. He decided to come to the house immediately and discussed it further. Unsatisfied with the answer (NO!), he warned me he’d call me every hour until morning came. On his first phone call at 2AM, I gave up and submitted to him coming and carting me off to the hospital. Turns out I was in the midst of attack #2.
That was a Sunday night. Monday at supper hour, while lying in bed in the room in Intensive Care, I had the third and what would probably have been the final one, except the nurses were jolly on the spot with nitroglycerine. Tuesday afternoon I had bypass surgery. Wednesday I went home.
There is nothing of more value in this world after family than friends. He saved my life.

By far, the best thing that happened in 2012 was the sale of my humorous urban fantasy/mystery/romance ELFY after _eight long years of trying_ to Twilight Times Books. (Here’s a link to what ELFY is about that’s one of the first posts I made at my blog. ELFY will be split due to length: http://elfyverse.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/what-elfy-is-about/) When I finished writing ELFY, my late husband was still alive, I hadn’t yet met the best friend I was ever going to have (who also is now deceased) and my husband and I had just sold our first-ever SFWA-qualifying short story (which is still the only SFWA-qualifying short story, but 2013 is young).
In the interim, I’ve done all sorts of things to learn more about the business, but most particularly the craft of editing. I’ve worked for a very small comics place, a comics magazine (bigger, but as I was freelance I don’t know how to describe it), was the acquisitions and overall editor for another small magazine, now defunct . . . now I do freelance editing and I continue to write (one of these days, when I have a bit more time — family health problems have not been easy to deal with in the past few years — I will be able to finish up both the prequel and sequel to ELFY). And I just completed a twelve-week copy-editing internship at the sports Web site Bleacher Report (as of yesterday).
I also edited in the neighborhood of twelve books in 2012, mostly fiction with some non-fiction/medical thrown in.
But yes. Finally finding a home for ELFY was by far the best thing of the year, because in so doing I can thus honor my wonderful late husband Michael and my excellent late best friend Jeff. (They were both huge fans of ELFY. My husband helped me come up with language, mores, customs and did my first big edit as he was a much better editor than I. And Jeff kept saying, “Keep sending it out there. It’s really good. Someone will like it. And even if they don’t, _I_ do. Now, what’s going on with AN ELFY ABROAD –” (sequel) “– and KEISHA’S VOW?” (prequel)
I have to think that some day, I’ll be able to share with them everything that happened after they passed from this Earth.

2012 was *amazing* for me — how to narrow down to the “best”??? Maybe I can summarize it as: the best thing that happened to me in 2012 is that I explored the possibilities of What if — ? What if things I’d been allowing to hold me back were merely remnants of perspective that no longer served me? What if Life were infinitely more beautiful and magical than I’d been living? What if I *can* create a life that surpasses my dreams…?

2012 ended up being pretty epic for me so choosing jut one thing is so hard. The best thing was interviewing Sean Maher (who plays Simon Tam in Firefly), the first thing he did when he walked in the room was hug me. He was utterly lovely and delightful and amazing, and when we met a few days later in a con signing line he climbed over a table to hug me goodbye. Being a Browncoat who never imagined meeting any of the cast, it surpassed any dreams I had, and even better I worked to make the dream come true! (this only just beat becoming an aunty for the first time and both things happened on the same weekend!).

In September of 2012 I finally got out of the, dead end job and started working at the greatest place ever! It was truly a dream come true getting a job with Amazon and I’ve never been happier. Before I had chronic knew problems, but when I got to Amazon and had the opportunity to work at a desk all day, they went away and now I no longer need to use my cane. To give some perspective, I’m only 23 so using a cane is more of a problem than it sounds to be. So getting a job with Amazon has not only made me happier than I’ve ever been, but it’s made my life healthier and better than it has been in more than five years.

Survived and recovered from being hit by an 18-wheeler. Found out my support network was much larger than i ever imagined. Started my own business. Made a bunch of new friends and found some really cool blogs and books to read.

On December 28th I adopted a cat from the local animal shelter. Minnie has been a very entertaining and cuddly addition to my home. Strangely enough, Minnie was the name they gave her at the shelter and she actually answers to it!

It was also the best thing that happened to me in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011: having the Awesomest Girlfriend in my life.

Wow, so many people have had such great things happen in 2012! I’m torn between: 1. Discovering that the best way to get my kid to behave is to stop being mad at him (so much easier- who knew?! Oh. Just about everybody!) and 2. Getting online more, discovering podcasts and twitter accounts and whole communities of people who enjoy spending hours and hours talking books and music and ideas. 2012 was the year I discovered we are living in the future! You probably shouldn’t pick me, because if you don’t I’m going to spend the $$ and buy Libriomancer anyway. :]

2012 was a pretty bad year. Poor health. Got fired. But I guess one good thing is that I’ve started generating ideas and doing some writing of my own.

Best thing in 2012 for me was a string of events: a post I wrote in my just-started blog supporting a somewhat famous musician was appreciated and retweeted by her, which resulted in over 4000 visitors to the blog in 48 hrs, an invitation to play in her backing band at her shows in my city, and having my writing complimented by her famous writer husband – the last of which convinced me to try doing NaNoWriMo, and I did write the requisite 50K words in my first longform attempt!

One of the best things in 2012 was rediscovering my love of writing and then discovering I was disciplined enough to actually ‘win’ NaNoWriMo.
I have to say Jim, I love reading your blog and seeing a man (gasp!) talking about things like sexism in art/media and the disrespectful treatment of women. So thank you for not only being a great writer but also a fantastic person. And congratulations on the current successes!

My husband and I had a room in our basement remodeled to be a play room for our daughter and future twins, it is such a nice space and made our house feel so much bigger!
