Wednesday Stuff
Thank you all for the supportive comments and stories on my depression post Monday, and I’m sorry I haven’t been able to respond to them all individually. It’s very much appreciated. On a related note, I think four of the most powerful words in English are “You are not alone.”

Rape Crisis Center Fundraiser Update: We’ve raised more than $2500 so far, which is wonderful. For those who still want to donate, RAINN is matching all donations for the rest of April, meaning anything you give is effectively doubled. Also, my LJ friend Shadesong is once again doing the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center Walk for Change. If you sponsor her, that would also count as an entry toward my fundraiser. I’m just saying…

Remember that cover pose thing I did earlier this year? I’m thinking about doing another one to address some of the most common responses I hear when we talk about how women are posed and portrayed. This is inspired in part by the comments to an article over at Tor.com: Hey Everyone, Stop Taking This Picture. What do you think? Does the world need another round of ridiculously-posed Jim pics?

I have Libriomancer bookmarks. If you’ll be going to a convention in the next 3-4 months and would be willing to put some bookmarks out on the freebies table, please let me know? Thank you!

This is kind of like asking if the world needs more puppies or ice cream.

Uh, does the world need more happiness? Yes, yes it does.

Note to self: add puppies eating ice cream to this round of cover pose pics!

Big thumbs up on the poses. More please. It’s so disturbing and so funny if you’re willing to throw your back out to do it, we’re ready for it.

Yes please, more Jim photos would be AWESOME. *waits*
Also, I have the cover for my book now and I cannot wait to show it off, partly because the girl on it is not posed in an uncomfortable or over-sexulized way. Because my book designer and cover artist are amazing. Yay!

We’re working on a cover-reveal contest thing for sometime in May. *crosses fingers*

“Does the world need another round of ridiculously-posed Jim pics?”
Does hot chocolate need marshmallows? Do green eggs require ham? Does Calvin need Hobbes?
Of course we need another round of such pictures. Preferably with black leather. But not if it’s going to hurt your spine this time.

I’m totally down with more ridiculously-posed Jim pics. 🙂

WHY does RAINN do that every time I give – they put the doubling in place a few days after and I can’t give again and they don’t make it retroactive, either.

You could totally do a live demonstration, say if there was some gathering coming up shortly that would have, I don’t know, a specific moment carved out to discuss such issues. Said moment might also give the opportunity for third parties to take photos. Not to mention group shots.

You know, I pitched a panel on this for Penguicon, but it doesn’t look like it made the cut 🙁

Umm, when I checked the schedule earlier this week it looked like there was (Saturday at 6pm). I haven’t received anything official from the Ferrett, (which sounds more Col War code-ish than necessary), but it was there on the site.

Oh, so it is! I must have missed that when I looked at the schedule. Cool!!!

I read through most of the comments on the Tor post. There was a lot of back and forth and the inevitable trolls, but it was an interesting conversation. I think the urban fantasy butt-shot pose has two functions. The first one, of course, is to be sexy, usually ridiculously so. The second reason, and the reason that many book covers don’t show faces (many YA covers cut off the head of the characters) is that the reader is supposed to fill in their own face.
A conversation about the sexual inequality of armor and protective gear would be another long comment list, I’m sure.

Looks like I will be on the posing panel with you. I propose a pose-off. You do the women, I’ll do the men. I think I can pretty much nail standing there face on, looking stiff.
Also, I’ll be going to the World Steam con if you want me to take Libromancer promo material.

Sounds like a plan!
And thank you! I’ll try to remember to bring some bookmarks for ya 🙂
