Unbound: Chapter One
The next Magic ex Libris book, Unbound, comes out on January 6, 2015.
I did a highly scientific poll over on Facebook, asking when I should post the first chapter online. While answers varied, the majority of people suggested “Right now!!!”
Who am I to argue? I put together the preview in both .pdf and .epub formats. Both files looked good and passed validation, but please let me know if you find a problem:
Unbound Chapter One [pdf | epub]
There will be at least four books in the series, but in a lot of ways, books one through three have their own complete story arc. If I got eaten by a robot dinosaur today, I think this could work as a satisfying conclusion. And I’m very excited to share some of the twists and changes I’ve been building toward since book one.
A few people on Facebook suggested not posting the preview until the book was available for pre-order. Which makes me think I haven’t done as good a job as I should of letting everyone know that it is, in fact, available for pre-order 🙂

January 15 is far, far too far away! Want book now! (I also need to go back and re-read Codex Born.)
One thing I noticed which I don’t know if it’s a mistake or me not understanding the sentence. On page 4 of the pdf version “I stared at that pile as if the droppings that turned this part of the grass into a minefield, as though I could use them to divine where Ted had gone…” I keep stumbling over that; to me it reads like the ‘as if” should lead into something other than another phrase beginning “as though”.
Not trying to re-write you, promise! It just felt as if I was tripping over a phrase. And I couldn’t pull up the other version on this computer to compare them.

No, I stared at that one for a while in the page proofs, too. The final wording may be a little bit different there.

Arrgh, no, why can’t it be December? Tell DAW I’m annoyed. But looking forward all the same. Isaac has apparently gotten muscles and a new haircut. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this, and for writing the whole series! I eagerly await the rest of it. 😀
“At least thirty-four of my friends and neighbors, had died in that battle.” extraneous comma after neighbors
“I stared at that pile as if the droppings that turned this part of the grass into a minefield, as though I could use them to divine where Ted had gone” that’s kind of convoluted… I think it would make more sense if you cut out the middle, and it was just “I stared at that pile as if I could use the droppings to divine where Ted had gone…”
“We knew only that the airport had no record of Jeneta boarding a flight.” When I read this, I mentally put the stress on “had no record”, so the italicized “boarding” seemed out of place.
